Dick’s Drive-In to open new location on Federal Way
This will be Dick’s ninth burger restaurant; is scheduled to open in 2023.
Dick’s Drive-In will open its new burger joint on Federal Way next year, according to an April 28 company announcement.
The iconic burger restaurant is slated to be located along Pacific Highway South in The Commons shopping center near the incoming Amazon Fresh store.
“We are excited to announce our next location,” said Jasmine Donovan, president of Dick’s Drive-Ins and granddaughter of namesake Dick Spady. “When we looked for our first location in South King County, we loved every town and community we visited and wish we could open a location in all of them. It’s so exciting to share that we’ll soon be creating delicious memories in Federal Way.”
Donovan said Dick’s is aiming to open the Federal Way location sometime in 2023, depending on the permitting and construction process.
He added that the restaurant will look almost identical to the existing Dick’s Drive-In location in Kent. Federal Way will then serve as a “sister store” to the Kent location, allowing customers and employees to enjoy the two South King County cities outside of the Dick’s Seattle locations.
A mockup image of the incoming store shows a stand-alone building on the west side of the parking lot with exterior service windows facing Pacific Highway South. The Commons shopping center property is owned by Merlone Geier Partners.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dick’s Drive-In to The Commons at Federal Way,” said Heather Beal, CEO of Merlone Geier. “This iconic local restaurant has such a deep and delicious history in our community and will perfectly complement our growing offering of new shops and restaurants.”
The Federal Way location creates about 50 jobs, Donovan said. The minimum wage at Dick’s in Kent is $19 an hour, and the Federal Way locations hope to match that income, according to the company.
“Some people have questioned why we would continue to grow with all the uncertainty we’re facing right now. We’re proud of the jobs we offer and want to provide more opportunities for people, especially during these difficult times,” he said, adding add that all Dick’s shift, store and regional managers are promoted from within.
In 2018, Dick’s opened its first South King County restaurant in Kent after customers voted for a location in South Seattle.
Kent’s Dick’s Restaurant is close to Highline College’s main campus. Among other benefits, the company offers a $28,000 education grant for all employees who work at least 20 hours per week, according to Dick’s.
Dick’s Drive-Ins offers a limited menu of burgers made with certified “fresh never frozen” USA ground Angus beef on fresh, locally made buns, as well as hand-cut Washington potato fries and whipped milkshakes hand and individually whipped. , according to the company.
